And now, both the National University of Singapore (NUS) and the post-Nantah which claimed to be linked to the former Nantah by flesh and blood, announced that the grade of the mother tongue will not be counted in their admission criteria. By saying so, he means that the problem of the Chinese education arises because the Chinese community has not put in enough efforts to create enough space for the use of Chinese, and as a result of the Government’s implementation of bilingual policy which forces the students to learn the mother tongue. Now that the constituency which supports the mother tongue education is losing its political influence, and the opposing camp’s voice is getting louder and louder, the Government made some calculation to it and now decides to change its course mid-stream. With regard to the relaxation of the policy, the relevant authority said that admission of students to the university should be based on their strong subjects. Being poor in the mother tongue does not necessarily mean that the student cannot do well in the other subjects. The new admission criteria allow those who are poor in the mother tongue but nevertheless talented otherwise to be admitted to the university and faculty of their choice. Not many students can master both English and the mother tongue, some do not have the chemistry with English, while others may not click with Chinese. Notwithstanding the Government’s verbal emphasis that the policy adjustment does not represent that the mother tongue is no longer important, what would be the interpretation and reaction of the students who have been immersed in this utilitarian society all these years? To the students, the removal of compulsory inclusion of grades of the mother tongue in the admission criteria can only be interpreted that the mother tongue is no longer important. Even if they realise that Chinese is fast becoming an important language because of the emergence of China, to the students, their immediate concern is how to squeeze through this narrow gate to get admitted to the university. Mr Low Thia Khiang (In Mandarin): Who is going to be so unrealistic as to spend valuable time in upgrading his mother tongue rather than using it to fortify his other subjects? But I would like to remind everybody that this exclusion of mother tongue result as one of the criteria for university admissions may appear to be just one little step, but by taking this small little step, we are moving nearer to the stage in which mother tongue ceases to exist except in name. Compromising the standard of mother tongue to facilitate the learning of English for pragmatic reason and treating mother tongue as an economic tool, Singapore is second to none in this world.Transparency of University Admission System Mr Low Thia Khiang: Sir, almost all universities around the world practise a policy of minimum non-graduate qualification acceptable for admission into their institutions, including Singapore. My question is whether the new system of allowing university to set independent admission criteria will affect public confidence in our education system in which promotion to a higher level of education is based on merit and academic results. The concern is, with the prospect of lower funding for universities and the need for universities to master resources in order to compete, whether this new system of allowing universities to set their own admission critieria will become a back-door for admitting children of the rich and the influential, as these people do have the resources to contribute to the development of a university community. It is also equally important that university authorities should make known to the students the specific reasons for rejection into university courses and the rationale behind the decision.Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam: Mr Low Thia Khiang raised some broader issues, some of which I have touched on yesterday, and I do not want to go over the same ground again. But it is entirely for the universities or faculties within the universities to decide if they think the mother tongue is important. It is for them to decide whether to take into consideration a student who is outstanding in mother tongue. And we have ensured that students who have done well in mother tongue will not lose out because they can continue to count it in their scores. I would like the Minister to clarify whether he would consider offering GP in Chinese as well, thereby allowing students to either opt to take GP in Chinese or in English, and be counted as one of the admission criteria. They will not be transparent on the question of why student A got in and student B did not get in. The universities will have to decide for themselves whether they think that is a valuable subject and whether, in fact, selecting students on that basis will be relevant to certain faculties or departments. Are there students who are keen to take GP in Chinese, and will the universities, based on their assessment of the type of graduates they want to produce, say that this is a useful subject that they want to take into account? I have elaborated on how critical it is for Singapore to ensure that the mother tongue languages do not get eroded and that students, especially through our school system, 10-12 years of education, have enough incentive to motivate themselves to take the mother tongue seriously.

-ne Then God said, “Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters / and let it divide the waters from the waters” / Thus God made the firmament / and divided the waters which were under the firmament / from the waters which were above the firmament/ and it was so / And God called the firmament Heaven / So the evening and the morning were the second day.The key word for the second day is “firmament,” So, on the second day, I’d say God created gravity – Two of the four are what hold the centers of atoms together, one is the electromagnetism that causes magnets and charged particles to stick together, and the last one is gravity, which it’s not too far wrong to say holds everyTHING together. Gravity, on the other hand, is so weak that we can’t see it (yet) and can’t fit it together with the other three forces (yet). But gravity is special because it’s inclusive: everything that is made of matter can both give and take tugs of gravity on everything else made of matter, and this can be from a significant distance.Because gravity is so different, it makes sense that it’s the one force that separated from the others first, after the Big Bang. The dust was very gaseous and nebulous and poorly formed, but gravity pulled it together into spherical stars with the same kind of crisp shape you see in our sun. God set up gravity, at the moment of creation, to shape the stars out of the matter that spilled out of the Big Bang. Atoms got mashed together so tightly they started to fuse together, making new atoms and a little extra energy to burn (therefore, stars are both hot and bright). from weak but persistent gravity overcoming the stronger forces. The concept of all these stars forming from the amorphous clouds of matter, knit together by gravity, is similar in my mind to God’s word separating waters from waters on the second day. Here’s a picture of an infant galaxy forming nearby, relatively recently, and you can sort of see gravity pulling it together:[Image from the Hubble Space Telescope, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Hubble_-_infant_galaxy.jpg]I want to give you a paradox here: God is wholly other and different from his creation, but he is also everywhere, and if he’s everywhere, he is very, very near. If he’s omnipresent, he knows when the sparrow falls, when the hairs fall, and he knows every time gravity knits part of his creation together. I also knew that the grass was made of carbon atoms and water molecules, and that all those stars were very, very far away, and if I tripped in a hole that I would fall in the dark, because gravity was still doing its job. The sun’s gravity keeps it in place, the sun’s light keeps it warm, the moon’s gravity keeps it from wobbling too much, and somehow it had liquid water and a richness of the chemicals needed for life. This is what happened.

The New West End synagogue, in Bayswater, was also given Grade II* listing in 1998, but was upgraded yesterday by the Department of Culture to a Grade I. Hannah Parham, English Heritage’s protection adviser, added: A lot of early 19th-century synagogues tried to follow the styles of their Christian counterparts, but the New West End Synagogue celebrated the cultural heritage of the people it served. Her book Jewish Heritage in England, published last year, said many synagogues and other Jewish sites in the UK had disappeared or were under threat.Independent

This month, as President Bush pushes the far less economically significant Central American Free Trade Agreement, he will be lucky to get more than 10.A long, slow erosion of Democratic support for trade legislation in the House is turning into a rout, as Democrats who have never voted against trade deals vow to turn their backs on CAFTA.A trade deal that passed the Senate last Thursday, 54 to 45, with 10 Democratic votes, could very well fail in the House this month. But the Democrats’ near-unanimous stand against CAFTA carries long-term risks for a party leadership struggling to regain the appearance of a moderate governing force, some Democrats acknowledge.

I’m not crazy about the label, but he has hit for power and shown speed thus far in his career.Francouer hit .273-13-62 with 13 steals and 20something doubles (can’t find the number at the moment, sorry). 5-1 with a 2.96 era, in 54 innings he’s given up 46 hits, 15 walks (that’s an excellent WHIP), and has 66 ks (and every K-related ratio here is outstanding). Ole Chuck is a lefty, and according to Baseball America, left handed hitters are having a little bit of trouble hitting him. 4 innings later, he’d still just walked the 3 batters, had plunked another, had given up no hits or runs, and had 7 ks. The Braves bullpen struggles had to be on the brain when they took Devine - whom they were not expecting to be available.

-ne Daily Times, July 5, 2005CONTROVERSY: Imrana rape case and fatwa controversy —Yawar BaigIf we accept this line of reasoning, then rape will have to be acknowledged as a way of establishing a marital relationship and all raped women would become the wives of the rapists without the necessity of nikah. The first tragedy was the rape itself, compounded, of course, by the fact that the rapist was her father-in-law. The spirit of the ruling of Imam Abu Haneefa could certainly not have been punishing an innocent woman traumatised by rape. For if we take this line of reasoning, then rape will have to be acknowledged as a way of establishing a marital relationship and all raped women would become the wives of the rapists without the necessity of nikah. So how can the fatwa, that rape by the father-in-law establishes the mother-son relationship between the raped woman and her husband, be called logical? In this context we should consider a ruling of Imam Shafa’ai, which is based on the ayah of Sura Al Furqaan, where Allah mentions His blessings on mankind. “If Allah wants to keep alive every sunnah of His Prophet (PBUH) who am I to change that and declare rulings based on his sunnah which are different from mine as invalid or incorrect?”It is in this spirit that I suggest that the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) create a committee of ulema of all four schools of thought (madhahib) which should examine the rulings of all the four Imams, on all matters relating to civil law and codify the ones most relevant to present times as the Muslim Personal Law Code.

and, while the abortion death rate was going down so strikingly in that 30 year period, we know what happened to the population and the birth rate. Whatever trouble arises usually comes after self-induced abortions, which comprise approximately 8 percent, or with the very small percentage that go to some kind of non-medical abortionist. Another corollary fact: physicians of impeccable standing are referring their patients for these illegal abortions to the colleagues whom they know are willing to perform them, or they are sending their patients to certain sources outside of this country where abortion is performed under excellent medical conditions. abortion, whether therapeutic or illegal, is in the main no longer dangerous, because it is being done well by physicians.” Again, see Scott Klusendorf’s post for more information and for an informed response.

You do the math.Ultimately, there are good reasons to pick London over Paris: governmental ability to deliver a good games, desireability of the location from the perspective of the most important international audience, the Americans, and a message that something is missing from the Paris bids that led to the city being passed over as the odds-on favorite.

Array The Terps were not even being talked about after getting trashed by North Carolina just last Sunday at Chapel Hill but two good games later and Maryland is one of the teams on the cusp of a NCAA invite. The Terps have more work to do but they are in a good position to play their way back into the NCAAs this week. The game was a see saw of emotion for Maryland as they outplayed Virginia from the opening tip till about the 10 minute mark in the 2nd half. With Sean Singletary picking up his fourth foul with 16 minutes left and Virginia trailing by 18 points you would think the game was over but feeding off the emotion of the final ACC game at UHall and some phenomenal play from JR Reynolds the Wahoos made an astonishing 20-5 run and tied the game at 62. A clutch 3-pointer by Mike Jones with just over a minute left turned out to be the deciding basket as Maryland pull out a 71-70 squeaker. The defense has improved slightly over the last two games holding opponents to under 40% shooting in back-to-back games for the first time in over a month. The defense faltered during the period when UVA closed the gap and tied the game but the players bolstered their efforts in the last two minutes and didn’t give Virginia any good looks at the basket. They have gotten clutch baskets and timely defense in the last two games which they were not getting February. How did Maryland pull out the game? They struggled to guard JR Reynolds, a streaky shooter who can get in a zone and carry his team for a game, but limited Singletary and the rest of UVA’s backcourt. Maryland will need him healthy for the ACC tournament.Nik Caner-Medley is perhaps coming into his own as a team leader and was instrumental in exhorting his teammates to not let the game slip away in the waning moments.

How does that serve the American people?Several Republicans also said they saw little alternative but to act or face the prospect of Democrats’ taking the initiative, potentially cutting into a Republican political advantage on national security issues.Democrats said they were surprised at how quickly Republicans were moving to separate themselves from Mr. Bush. What this shows is that the Republican leadership realized this cannot be swept under the rug and that time, if anything, will make things worse, said Senator Charles E.

We are pretty much jumping into it full-force – six small meals a day, virtually no food not on the “approved” food list, and hitting the gym 6 days a week. Now, to say I’m not a fan of physical labor, much less exercise, is an understatement. Some of my favorite sayings include “No pain, no pain,” “Of course I’m in shape – Round’s a shape, isn’t it?” and “Perfect health is merely the slowest rate at which one can die.” I’ve always viewed exercise as something performed by masochists with too much free time. This philosophy is evident in my life. I’m sure they were just turned on by my manly potbelly. So here I am, back at home, thinking about the many tasks that I need to do but, ahem, weighing those tasks against my inability to raise my hands above my chest.

We are totally self funding as a public trust and don’t get any help from local or state sources.” The recession of 2001 was hard on the park, which lost about 2,000 of the 5,100 employees that worked there in 2000. Having an 800 pound gorilla like and auto company in a town the size of Pryor would be a major economic boost in the short term, but as the auto industrial surges and ebbs perhaps not so good in the long term.

The main story is simultaneously that while GOI employees at the top are incredibly underpaid - by market standards - the bulk of GOI employees (roughly 98% of them) are incredibly overpaid by market standards. They find on average, the public sector premium ranges between 62 percent and 102 percent over the private-formal sector, and between 164 percent and 259 percent over the informal-casual sector, depending on the choice of methodology… The wage differentials in India tend to be higher in rural as compared with urban areas, and are higher among women than among men…. The right principle to adopt is: At all levels, GOI should pay the lowest possible wage at which an adequate candidate can be hired. It is not correct to compare the growth of GOI wages against the growth of private wages.

Array-ne

The place to begin when looking at any serious issue from a Christian perspective is, of course, the Bible. There are hundreds of references to the poor in the Bible, particularly in the Old Testament. I’ve not yet had the opportunity to study them all, but we’ve looked at a number of passages, and some distinct themes seem to be emerging. In this post, I’ll try to summarize our initial discoveries about Poverty from our study of Old Testament passages.(Note: The numbering for these points isn’t really significant, it just helps separate ideas. )A. God’s view of the Poor1. God made both the rich man and the poor man—we were created alike (Job 31:15)2. God does not wish us to keep our food to ourselves, but to share with the needy (Job 31:17)3. God, as the eternal King, is a champion of the poor, needy, afflicted, and those who have no helper. He will deliver them and save them from violence and harm. (Psalm 72:12-13; 140:12)4. God is despised when the poor are mistreated (Proverbs 14:21, 31)5. Showing ill will toward the needy is a sin (Deuteronomy 15:9)6. There will always be poor in the land (Deuteronomy 15:11)7. There should not be needy among you (among the Israelites) (Deuteronomy 15:4)B. Laws Set up to protect the poor1. Laws exist to protect slaves (Exodus 21:1-11)2. Murder of slaves is condemned (Exodus 21:20-21)-this indicates that slaves were human too, and deserved protection and respect.3. Restitution required if property is stolen or damaged (Exodus 22:1-15)- private property affirmed4. Israel ordered to protect the right of foreigners & aliens (Exodus 22:21, 23:9, Lev. 19:33)5. Do not afflict Widows & orphans (Exodus 22:22)- God will execute vengeance on those who afflict widows and orphans (Exodus 22:23-24)6. Do not charge interest to the needy (Exodus 22:25-27)7. Do not deny justice to the needy or to the innocent (Exodus 23:6-7)8. Let both the poor and the alien gather from the fields (Leviticus 19:9-10, 23:22)-This enabled the poor to sustain themselves even if they were without land or good crops- This indicated that the rights of landowners were not absolute.9. Blood relatives were to have the right of redemption for slaves (Leviticus 25: 47-49)- This would protect the poor Hebrews and keep responsibility and help in the family10. Blood relatives were to have the right of redemption for land (Leviticus 25: 25-28)-this would protect the poor Hebrews & keep responsibility & help in the family11. Hebrew slaves were to go free in the year of Jubilee (Leviticus 25:40-42)12. The land was to have a Sabbath rest during which anyone could gather from what it produced naturally(Leviticus 25:1-7)-this showed that God was the true landowner, not man- when both rich and poor had to gather together, it reaffirmed their common identity13. Hebrew slaves were to go free in the year of Jubilee–every 50 years. (Leviticus 25:40-42)13. There is a difference in how you treat your “brother” versus a foreigner (Deuteronomy 15:3) - Foreigners, although treated kindly and justly, were not recipients of all of the laws- This has implications for who we should help first: i.e. our brother, then others.C. The Expected response of God’s people toward the poor1. God orders us to be generous toward the poor (Deuteronomy 15:7-8)2. Job rescued the poor, the abandoned orphan, the widow, the blind, the lame, and the stranger (Job 29:12-16)3. Job’s involvement was generous and he was personally involved. (Job 29:12-16)4. Our righteousness is linked with our help for the poor & needy and executing Justice for them. (Job 29:12-16)5. Job sought justice for his slaves (Job 31:13) that God might treat him justly (v 14)6. Be just in your dealings with all—honest weights & measures (Leviticus19:35-36)7. You should stand up and defend the rights of the poor, afflicted, and needy. (Proverbs 31:9)8. Job wished to be treated by God as he treated others (Job 31:13-23)9. True fasting should help the needy, not ourselves (Isaiah 58:3-10)- fasting (spritual sacrifice) is not to enhance our own spirituality alone.10. Fasting should provide the hungry with food, the wanderer with shelter, the naked with clothing, and release captives & slaves (Isaiah 58:6-7)11. Spiritual growth and revival are linked with our treatment of the poor (Isaiah 58: 2-3, 9-10)12. Urban renewal goes with honoring God and helping the poor (Isaiah 58:12)13 If a brother becomes poor, you are to help him in any way possible (Leviticus 25: 35-37)14. Protect the right of foreigners & aliens (Exodus 22:21, 23:9, Lev. 19:33)-Not simply those who are israelites/citizens15. Do not afflict Widows & orphans (Exodus 22:22)16. Do not deny justice to the needy or to the innocent (Exodus 23:6-7)17. Let both the poor and the alien gather from the fields (Leviticus 19:9-10, 23:22)D. Blessings & curses associated with our treatment of the Poor1. God promises to bless those that help the poor cheerfully (Deuteronomy 15:9-10)2. God will execute vengeance on those who afflict widows and orphans (Exodus 22:23-24)3. If we do not treat others with compassion & justice, God will judge us (Job 31:14, 22-23)4. Sodom’s main sin was being arrogant, overfed and unconcerned

(Note: remember this blog is moving to a new home at: Against the Madness.)If one wants to know if the Catholic Church is likely to go through any big changes with the change in leadership, I noticed a clue this weekend.Former Archbishop of Boston Cardinal Bernard Law appeared on ABCs This Week with George Stephanopoulos. He has also been heard, in the last few days, doing sound bites for various news broadcasts.Cardinal Law, resigned from the Boston post in December 2003, after 58 of the priests in the diocese expressed a lack of faith in his leadership. This extraordinary event came as the culmination of Law’s mis-handling of the sexual abuse scandals in the Boston Diocese. In an article entitled Why isn’t Bernard Law in Jail (Part 2), Dahlia Lithwick of Slate magazine described some of the evidence against Law:Last spring, Law admitted in a deposition that he was aware that John Geoghan had reportedly raped at least seven young boys in 1984 yet nevertheless approved the transfer of Geoghan to another parish, working with other boys. Other documents revealed that Law similarly knew of and ignored decades of reported child abuse by Paul Shanley, placing Shanley in ministries with access to other children.Throughout his tenure, Law seemed to reserve his warmest sympathy for the abusers, not the victims. He lied to a West Coast bishop about Shanleys history. He signed a document attesting that another known child-molesting priest, Redmond Raux, had “nothing in his background” to make him “unsuitable to work with children.” Last week, more court documents revealed that the archdiocese gave new jobs to two priests, one of whom was known to have molested boys while the other had supplied cocaine to a teenage lover. Laws responses to these and earlier disclosures? The molesters had been cleared by physicians

-ne The Hippopotamus Game In his excellent autobiography Mikhail Tal told an entertaining story of what does a chessplayer think when he plays: JOURNALIST. We reached a very complicated position where I was intending to sacrifice a knight. And then suddenly, for some reason, I remembered the classic couplet by Korney Ivanovich Chukovsky: Oh, what a difficult job it was To drag out of the march the hippopotamus. I dont know from what associations the hippopotamus got onto the chess board, but althoug the spectators were convinced that I was continuing to study the position, I, despite my humanitarian education, was trying at this time to work out: just how would you drag a hippopotamus out of the marsh? And the following day, it was with pleasure that I read in the paper how Mikhail Tal, after carefully thinking over the position for 40 minutes, made an accurately- calculated piece sacrifice…

-ne Experience is a hard teacher because she gives the test first, the lesson afterwards.-Vernon Sanders LawMy job has started to get a lot more fun. I now have started to do the mentoring part that I was so looking forward to.I brought with me to Kabul with a number of old medical texts and medical related CDs. So I decided that I was goint to give some of my old text books to some of the providers in the new clinic. You would have thought that I gave them Rolex watches. You could see his eyes light up when I gave him the ER text. He was so excited that he had me write a little note and sign the inside cover. My first order of business was to gauge the doctors level of medical knowledge so I could see where my focus should be. We were discussing the treatment for back pain and the ER doctor initially gave me all of the right answers. He went on to give some explanation that did not quite make a lot of sense. I just smiled and gave him one of my funny looks. You would not want to give it because patients are usually severely dehydrated. That gave me a big laugh.

Title photo courtesy of Women of Hope ProjectReality continues to ruin my life.-Bill Watterson, Calvin and HobbesUS cartoonist (1958 - ) This morning was a little scary. I have to say that it was the first time that the reality of where I am sunk in. It is really easy to get into a mode of routine and forget where you are. Needless to say, we are all fine and, as they say in the Navy, we will continue on smartly.Traversa from A*W*A*C* blog would describe these kind of days as “snow days.” Whenever something bad happened, and you were confined to the base for the day, it was comparable to when you were a kid and you could not get to school because of the snow. We took advantage of our snow day and decided to take care of our other jobs. Those of you that have been reading my blog since its inception know that about 2 months ago my job sort of changed after getting here. Aside from moving to a different base we also were integrated into the larger staff that is making plans to build a lot more new clinics throughout Afghanistan. We had some meetings on this topic and assigned some work. It was a pretty productive day.My favorite 8th grade class from Gaffney, South Carolina sent me a big box with some interesting looking stuffed animals. I will try and get them to Betsy so she can forward them to the children in the refugee camp. It really shocked me when she said that some of the kids she encountered had never had their own toy before.Someone from Summerville, Massachusetts also sent us a care package. One of the nurses said that Apples to Apples is a really fun game. I look forward to playing it.I received an email from someone from the Volunteer Communty Relations (VCR) group. I wanted to share it with all of you. I posted some of their pics on my slide show up top. This was a special Thanksgiving holiday for the VCR because we spent it on a humanitarian mission. We visited an extremely poor community as you can see by the mud huts and ruble in the background. Some of the people had no material possessions to speak of except for the clothes on their back. There were 56 families in the village and we gave each one three large bags of clothing, blankets and toys. We spent time with about 200 children blowing bubbles and playing with balloons. The people were so friendly and happy

My talk ‘Why do I need an Inversion of Control Container’ got off to a bad start when I discovered that there was no way of attaching my Macbook’s DVI plug to the projector. I must admit the panic meant that I was more than a bit flustered, I missed a whole load of good points I wanted to make and my tendency to talk too fast was probably attenuated somewhat. Thanks to everyone who came up to talk afterwards, I really appreciated your feedback, especially the lady who pointed out that I hadn’t said where you can get the Castle Windsor download from.
