After taking an elevator up to the balcony accompanied by a tuxedoed usher as polite applause rippled across the theater for openers Amiina, I knew this wouldn’t be a typical rock show. In a venue that regularly hosts performances of Die Fledermaus and Cosi fan Tutte, Sigur Rós’ epic compositions and enormous sound still seemed fit to share the stage, even if the fans in attendance were not typical of the Lyric Opera House’s usual black tie audiences.

The four Icelandic women of Amiina wowed the crowd with their skills on the strings, incorporating bells, electronics, and even the saw into their short opening set. The strings were the focus of every song, with the quartet sitting in a small square atop a tall platform, seemingly unaware an audience existed. As each song progressed, various members left the platform to smoothly wander the stage from instrument to instrument, building the sound gradually in the typical post-rock style Sigur Rós made popular. Amiina’s sound was also very reminiscent of another Icelandic band, Mum, especially as the precious tinkling of the bells were looped and layered through the Apple computer that rested incongruously on stage. After thanking the audience with some very adorable broken English, the band wrapped things up with an uncharacteristically danceable song with a serious beat.

After taking in the beauty of the Lyric’s interior and hitting up the nicest bathroom I’ve ever used at a concert, the lights dimmed and the curtains drew back to reveal the band positioned behind a sheer white screen. Easing into “Glósóli” from their latest album Takk . . ., the shadows of the band and their instruments moved across the screen as they played from behind while faint gray video of leaves blowing and feet stomping projected onto the stage. The sound grew gradually, eventually filling the entire room with the final minute’s heart-pounding drums and singer Jon Thor Birgisson’s piercing voice, every note of every instrument crystal clear. As the song finished and the crowd cheered, the screen rose to reveal the band, the women of Amiina perched on their platform in the familiar square position, Jon standing awkwardly in front of the microphone at the center of the stage with his guitar and bow in hand.

After that stellar beginning, the band’s set focused primarily on songs from their most recent albums, the rockin’ Takk . . . (“Hoppipola” and “Sæglópur” were definite standouts) and the far more mellow and sedative ( ) (Yu-si-yo!), which often left me wanting to close my eyes and just take in the sounds in peace. The lighting very much complemented the show as video continued to stream on a screen behind the band; the greens, blues and reds flashed across the stage in perfect timing with the music, while the shadows of the various band members could often be seen along the theater’s side walls. Meanwhile, the band stood rather rigidly on stage, with most of the movement coming from the sways of the members of Amiina as their arms flowed with the bows of their strings. Only once did Birgisson speak, and whether it was broken English or unintelligible Icelandic (or maybe Hopelandish?), no one in the audience was quite sure what he said.

After briefly leaving the stage to more of that polite applause, the screen lowered in front of the band again as they returned to the stage to close out the show with Untitled

-ne By James Brandon06/15/2006 - As Iran faces international pressure over its nuclear program, Tehran is growing increasingly concerned by the internal threat posed by a resurgent Kurdish national movement led by the Party for Freedom and Life in Kurdistan (PJAK).In 2006, PJAK may exceed this total. At the forefront will likely be Iran’s Kurds, and chief among them PJAK, which for nearly a decade has worked to replace Iran’s theocratic government with a federal and democratic system, respectful of human rights, sexual equality and freedom of expression.History of PJAKThe exact history of PJAK is widely disputed. Discouraged by the failure of previous Kurdish revolts, however, PJAK’s leaders initially worked only to maintain and build a Kurdish national identity and to thwart the Iranian government’s attempts to re-brand Iranian Kurds as ethnic Persians or Aryans. After a series of government crackdowns against Kurdish activists and intellectuals, the group’s leadership moved to the safety of Iraqi Kurdistan in 1999. Once established at Qandil and operating under the PKK’s security umbrella, PJAK adopted many of the political ideas and military strategies of jailed PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan, whose theories had initially inspired PJAK’s founders while still in Iran. The PKK’s ideological influence also transformed PJAK from a civil rights movement to a more ambitious and multi-directional independence movement, aided by the transfer of many seasoned PKK fighters of Iranian origin into PJAK [4].IdeologySince then, PJAK has adopted many aspects of Abdullah Ocalan’s ideology, particularly his renunciation of his earlier communist ideologies in favor of democratic liberalism and his belief that civil activists need to be defended by military cadres. While PJAK’s leaders have twice kidnapped groups of Iranian soldiers in 2003 and 2004, in both instances they were released unharmed after being tried and acquitted for crimes against the Kurdish people by ad hoc PJAK courts in Iranian Kurdistan.Equally, PJAK’s vision is less radical than the PKK’s. Privately, however, since PJAK itself is not exclusively composed of Iranian Kurds and contains Kurds from as far away as Russia, many PJAK members hope for the amalgamation of all Kurdish areas into a single fully independent Kurdish republic.Yet, perhaps the most striking aspect of PJAK’s agenda is their call for the emancipation of women from Islamic law and Middle Eastern cultural norms. This, however, did not mark an overall change of strategy toward military confrontation.Military OperationsAlthough PJAK regularly engages Iranian troops, the group’s attacks are not intended to defeat Iran militarily, but instead to complement and protect PJAK’s political activists. The Iranian troops reached five kilometers into Iraqi territory before they withdrew (al-Jazeera, May 3).The Iranian attack is believed to have killed no more than 10 PJAK fighters, but it sent out a clear message that PJAK’s camp was not invulnerable. In addition, Kurds, including PJAK, after re-branding themselves as opponents of political Islam and partisans of human rights, women’s rights and democracy, are well-positioned to ride out coming geopolitical shifts in the Middle East and any fragmentation of Middle Eastern states.PJAK’s independent and non-state sources of funding and well-established underground network means that Iran will struggle to defeat either PJAK or the Kurdish nationalism it fosters. Yet, given Iran’s proven ability to absorb massive casualties, PJAK’s ambitions to create a military balance of power and deter future Iranian crackdowns on PJAK activists seem optimistic.

Well, Greg Gunderson’s rank is currently sitting at #17 out of 50 drivers. It has slipped from #11 to #17 over the past two weeks. It’s time to get on your computer or Sidekick internet connection and vote for Greg Gunderson to help get him on the Racin for a Livin reality show.By the way, check out the latest news story on Greg Gunderson that came out on June 8.Now, there are many ways to remind people to vote for Greg Gunderson. One is to use your Sidekick or Blackberry and text to your friends and ask them Did you vote today? When I say vote, it’s not like 1 or 5 votes per day. A little effort would be like voting 20, 30 or 100 votes in a day. You can even vote 10 times per hour throughout the day and you can end up voting 100 times already.Another way to help increase Greg’s voting rank is to put together a voting marathon party over the weekend. One voting marathon, which has already been confirmed, is set for July 8 with 30 people attending the party while 10 computers are set up. Each person get to vote as many times in 15 minutes before giving up the computer over to another person. This will allow each person a 30 minutes rest per person during the 8 hour voting marathon.Another way to encourage your deaf friends to vote is whenever you are on AIM, Yahoo, or MSN, put a little tag next to your name that says you are currently in a voting mood like Currently Voting for

Array-ne One would expect Virginia children to be better off than children in other states if only for the reasons that our household incomes are higher than the national average and Virginia has a smaller percentage of poor children. (Believe it or not, West Virginia edges us out!)Here’s how Virginia fared in the category scores (the lower the score, the better):Health status — 10Social and emotional well being — 19Cognitive development and educational attainment — 10Family activities — 41Family and neighborhood context — 26Social and economic context — 26What I find interesting is that Northeastern states known for the generosity of their social services fare the worst in the country.

I have climbed the Great Wall of China . . . That same day I saw family of 4 skates & a 4-5 foot shark. I’ve been rock climbing inside the largest indoor rock wall in the world (OKC Rocks - Oklahoma City, OK) 6. I played the violin for 7 years. I’ve been to Mount Rushmore, the Space Needle, Hollywood, the Empire State building, Times Square, the Grand Canyon, traveled on the cog-railway up Pike’s Peak, the Red Wood forest, Sequoia national park, Glacier national park, and all the 8th grade field-trip hot spots in Washington D.C. So far, I’ve traveled to 11 countries in 3 continents. I’ve moved at least 30 times in my life. I’ve made curtains, table runners, and simple dresses. Twice, I have read through the entire Bible sequentially (working on my third time). I went pitch-tent camping and hiking for the first time ever on my honeymoon. Needless to say, we cut the trip a day short after we both missed the comforts of civilized life (hot showers and pillows). I still own the same and only car I’ve ever purchased. It’s 11 years old and still runs without any problems. I started 2 new clubs in grad school. When I was 2 years old, I fell in my grandparents 8’ deep fish pond and couldn’t climb out of the slippery, moss-covered sides. I’ve been interviewed by TV media once in Austin, TX, and filmed for local news twice. I’ve been on a TV reality show. I was still in high school at the Texas Academy of Math & Science, but we lived in a dorm and took all college courses at the University of North Texas. I didn’t go to outdoor summer camps like other kids, I went to summer math and science camps, took college courses, or orchestra camps & I knew that the next day, no one would remember nor care what I earned and achieved the day before. my director and voice teacher was Downbeat magazine’s female jazz vocalist for 2 years: Catherine Jensen-Hole. After 3 years of chronic pain and chiropractic being the only thing that actually helped me, I decided to become a chiropractor. Since living in Florida in just 1.5 years, I have been in 6 hurricanes. I’ve been in a flood that began inside our house thanks to a leaky water heater pipe. I saw the sky turn ashen grey when Mount St. Helens erupted over 25 years ago. . . Amount of time I spend in lectures surfing the internet or studying for a class not related to the lecture: 60% 80. Daily habits that keep my immune system primed at optimal levels: drink green or oolong tea with ginger root, take my multi-vitamins, drink 1 gallon of water, get 7 hours of sleep, spinal exercises and rehab, & read my Bible in the morning. One of the stupidest things I did on the playground as a kid: accepted a dare to keep my foot on a red ant pile for a count of “10”. But, I moved to a suburb of Dallas by the time I was in 6th grade. That year, I got into 2 fist fights, both of which were started by other kids shoving me. My senior year of college, most of my courses required research papers instead of exams. I’d get my papers back a few weeks later and realize how many grammatical or flow errors I’d committed. I’ve only snow skied about 4 times in my life. and still earn my commission in time for graduation. I healed . . . sorta . . . I’m staying away from the black diamonds next time I ski! I can type 10 times faster than I can write by hand.

Published in the Courier News on December 18, 2003Derrick Caracter — all 6 feet, 9 inches and 275 pounds of him — raised hisright hand high above the crowd to receive the inbounds pass. He got the ball, and within the blink of an eye flicked it to 6-foot-7 teammate Lance Thomas, who threw down an uncontested dunk with two hands. Two hundred spectators cheered, and no fewer than five video cameras preservedthe moment. This was the scene at Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School’s boys basketballscrimmage against St. Mary of Elizabeth on Tuesday. Get your tickets now, because it’s going to be an awful lot of fun to watch theRaiders and their two towers this winter. And these guys are just sophomores. Its cool, having a big man just as good as me,” said Caracter, whotransferred to his hometown school after spending his freshman year at St.Patrick. “Its somebody to pass to, somebody who can finish around the basket. It’s cool — and much more. Caracter’s much-heralded return home, coupled withThomas’ vast improvement, has made Scotch Plains-Fanwood the talk of NewJersey’s seen-it-all hoops establishment. Suddenly, a team that finished 6-16last year is playing in three showcase tournaments and getting swing byvisits from Michigan, Georgetown and Wake Forest college basketball recruiters. Its more than I even thought,” head coach Dan Doherty said. The whirlwind began in the May, when Caracter decided to stay at ScotchPlains-Fanwood after transferring from St. Patrick in March. There were toomany distractions at the Union County catholic school, and his grades sufferedas a result. “I have my family close by and my friends,” said Caracter, who has been ratedthe No. 1 sophomore in the country. “Everybodys not so gassed up here. Theytreat me like a normal person. His arrival boosted an up-and-coming team to the top of everyone’s rankings.Thomas opened many eyes after averaging 15 points as a freshman. Junior pointguard Lakiem Lockery and senior forward Mike Walker are solid contributors.Throw in St. Anthony’s transfer Michael Johnson, a fleet-footed guard, and youhave the most talented lineup anyone has seen around these parts sinceBridgewater-Raritan West featured Eric Murdock and Lance Miller in the 1980s.Still, there were chemistry concerns at the beginning. Caracter and Thomas hadgone to different middle schools. They had played together on traveling teamsbut, as Doherty says, there might have been a little of Were going to be really good.link

Susan’s Road Trip to California–Continued

October 13th, 2008 by admin

Array You see, while everyone else seemed perfectly happy to play tag or catch or hide and seek every day (except on rainy days when they all went inside and watched television), Puppy was not. He wanted to do something different. He wanted adventures, and he wanted a friend to go adventuring with him, because as you probably already know, an adventure that you go on by yourself is no fun at all. Puppy had many friends, but none of them wanted to go on adventures with him. said Molly. So Puppy went away, feeling sadder than ever. Puppy walked faster down the forest path, and the sound got louder behind him. Puppy started to run. Puppy squeezed his eyes tightly shut and hoped that whatever it was wouldn’t hurt him when it stepped on his head. Puppy opened his eyes and saw who was holding his hand and tugging, hard. Puppy got up and together they tumbled off the path and into some bushes. Puppy and Little Rhino pressed up close to each other in the bushes and waited for the spindleblarp to pass. Puppy and Little Rhino smiled at each other. Puppy and Little Rhino walked home together and promised to meet at the entrance to the forest path the very next day. more puppy and little rhino! i learned an important lesson that truly arrived at the perfect time (after all, many pre-holiday anxieties are often spilled all over one’s special adventure partner, and said special adventure partners hardly ever like being spilled on.) thank you thank you thank you!

-ne DEC 21, 2003 Is it over for Steve Chia? More than 500 postings were made on Internet forums after The Straits Times reported yesterday that nude photos of Non-Constituency MP Steve Chia and his maid had been found in his home, and that his wife Doreen, 31, had found them and told the police. Mr Johnson Eng, 31, an engineer, e-mailed The Sunday Times: ‘His ability to make political decisions should not be questioned just because he has personal problems.’ Mr Chia’s NSP colleagues were keeping mum about the matter. NSP first organising secretary Victor Foo Kok Wah would only say: ‘The whole committee, including Steve Chia, will sit down at a later date to discuss the issue.’ Home Affairs Minister Wong Kan Seng said yesterday evening at a community event in Bishan that an MP’s position would be affected only if the offence carries a sentence.

-ne Sunday December 21, 2003 Amarillo, Texas, 5:29 a.m. local time. This time I was driving and had a U-Haul attached to me, so the reality hit and I lost it in the best way ever. As hard as it was to leave in certain ways, I know this is home and I belong here. First, the trip is better this time around because I broke it into three days. A couple of times I did not even get 175 miles on a tank of gas—I am used to almost 400 on the interstate! From 40 mpg to as low as 10 or 11 at times. I didn’t mind the money so much (cheaper than paying for a truck!) but I did mind having to stop all the time! I am so happy that when I return I will not be driving (not the first time at least!). This time I discovered that even when you are on cruise control at 70, the car will only go 45-50 ascending hills. Because of the time change I did not arrive til after midnight—and I lost at least an hour getting out of LA. I arrived early in Amarillo—even with the time change again I was sat my hotel by 7 or so. I should be sleeping LATER since I am on west coast time, but as my friend Lisa put it last week, I don’t think I ever adjusted to west coast time. I think I lived on Texas time the whole time I was in California. I am ready to crash, and when I arrive at Robin’s I get to rest a little for the first time in a long time. Really I won’t rest a whole lot til after Christmas because I have to unload my trailer and return it Christmas Eve and then drive back to Quitman Christmas day, but it is still rest and I can’t wait! Because I am meeting my friend for lunch and she goes to church, I have lots of down time this morning. Then I will head south to Ardmore, OK where I will get off the interstate onto a local highway, 70, and drive east to Hugo, OK where I will go south out of OK and into Quitman from the northern direction, rather than going through Dallas. MY ETA is probably close to 8 p.m., a perfect arrival time. Every year for three years I have left the Saturday of Christmas break and head to Alabama and stayed with the Zemas before heading on to see my aunt. I think her death is hitting now because I only saw her at Christmas; the rest of the time we talked on the phone, but now not seeing her makes her really gone. I am seeking an answer in one more aspect but I think I have til February to know that so I am not going to worry on that one.

Array Our last full scan done at 35 weeks 4 days showed them to be achieving quite spectacular growth rates for twins – they were approximately 7 pounds, 7 oz and 6 pounds 6 oz respectively, which is a pretty decent size even for single babies at that stage. Sarah’s had some twinges while the needles are in, and plenty of Braxton Hicks practice contractions, but nothing like the real thing yet!Today we’re exactly 37 weeks pregnant, and tomorrow is the weekly doctor visit, so we’ll see what they have to say, plus in other exciting news Cameron comes to town tomorrow for approximately the next six weeks – yay!

Steve’s always a popular guy in her mind but she loved him a bunch after her pumped up the pool. I had to take out Luke’s carseat (good thing he was at home mowing the grass with Aron) and fold down the seat in the CR-V (again as a side note to my dad, NOT A MINI-VAN, DAD) and squish the thing around in the back to get it to fit in. We came home and played in the pool some more then went over to Myles’s house for a BBQ.

we started out at ashton’s (now defunct), then moved to jake’s in the cozy church street house but the gang continues on in my absence meeting in fact every tuesday from 5-8 p.m.–if you like to knit, i’m sure they’d love for you to join them in the new jake’s location below eddie’s attic on the decatur square!)14. little shop of stories (this shop is new on the decatur scene since my departure and shares the cavernous yet comfortable space with jake’s; i’ve got others organized covering my trip to atlantic canada in 2003 and my time up in new york–they just need labelling and this always takes more time than i can seem to find but i know they are appreciated both by myself and others, so i’m going to work hard on them this summer…have patience!)19. anyway, this high-end deli run by two yankees is EVERYTHING transplanted new yorkers have yearned for and that foodies (like me) have dreamed of but i’m likewise pleased that they are happy to highlight southern ingredients like muscadine marmalade taking that classic pb&j to high never experienced in childhood. seeing a friend settled into a new home (and particularly admiring the paint palette for her new walls that reference santa fe (or lox!), paris, greece, and london)23. during rush-hour on friday, i got us from decatur and across the new (to me, at least) 17th street bridge by navigating a crazy, traffic-avoiding route through the neighborhoods of virginia-highlands, lenox hills, and ansley park)25. it was great to find them at home and oh-so-briefly tour their new digs, attempt to placate a baby whose meal i rudely interrupted, and check out the progress of a d.i.y. marta (ok, so it’s just completely pointless to even think of the nyc subway in comparison but i was somewhat impressed by with the breeze card system even if it still seems quite easy to evade the fare by now scooting under, rather than over, the fancy new whooshing gates.)29. 2 (months ago, i’d been seduced by the description of flamenco performances in frances mayes’s new book so when i read about la vida del flamenco, i knew i had to see this ancient dance passionately presented on the big screen; episcopal church of the epiphany (a good friend had recently been called to serve this parish so i went to see him preach in this new space; i ordered rigatoni in their florentine sauce: a mix of spinach, shallots, garlic, & ricotta–it was good but figo still holds the key to my pasta-lovin’ heart).throughout these ten very busy days that i spent soaking up all that i could of my old favorite haunts, in addition to exploring some new places, i found my hopes rising that this city will continue to monitor its urban growth carefully so that the good ole boys and the new kids on the block can peacefully co-exist. please also scroll to the end of this article for a bulleted section detailing new bars & restaurants, many of which i’m eager to explore on visits to atlanta in the weeks, months, and years to come!

Array-ne Muhammadhttp://www.prophetofdoom.net/quotes5.htmlCHRISTIANS: Qur’an 5:17 “Verily they are disbelievers and infidels who say, ‘The Messiah, son of Mary, is God.’”Qur’an 5:51 “Believers, take not Jews and Christians for your friends. The Meccans said, ‘He is the one who teaches Muhammad most of what he brings.’ Then Allah revealed, Qur’an 16:103 ‘We know what they (pagans) say: “It is only a mortal man who teaches him (Muhammad). Some faces (Jews and Christians) that Day, will be humiliated, downcast, scorched by the burning fire, while they are made to drink from a boiling hot spring.”Qur’an 9:29 “Fight those who do not believe in Allah or the Last Day, who do not forbid that which has been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, or acknowledge the Religion of Truth (Islam), (even if they are) People of the Book (Christians and Jews), until they pay the Jizyah tribute tax in submission, feeling themselves subdued and brought low.” [Another translation says:] “pay the tax in acknowledgment of our superiority and their state of subjection.”Ishaq:552 “The Quraysh had put pictures in the Ka’aba including two of Jesus and one of Mary. There has come to you from Allah a (new) light (Muhammad) and a clear Book [the Qur’an].”Qur’an 5:17 “…Say (Muhammad): ‘Who then has the least power against Allah, if His will were to destroy Christ, the Messiah, the son of Mary, his mother, and everyone else on earth?”Qur’an 5:18 “The Jews and the Christians say: ‘We are sons of Allah, and his beloved.’ Say: ‘Why then does He punish you for your sins? If any fail to judge by what Allah has revealed, they are (no better than) those who rebel.”Qur’an 5:48 “To you [Christians] We sent the Scripture in truth, confirming the scripture that came before it, and guarding it in safety: so judge between them by what Allah has revealed.”Qur’an 5:49 “And this (He commands): Judge between them by what Allah has revealed and follow not their [Christian] desires, but beware of them lest they beguile you, seducing you away from any of that which Allah hath sent down to you. Whoever joins other gods with Allah or says He has a partner, Allah has forbidden Paradise, and the Hell Fire will be his abode. There will for the wrong-doers be no one to help.” Qur’an 5:73 “They are surely disbelievers who blaspheme and say: ‘God is one of three in the Trinity for there is no Ilah (God) except One, Allah. The Messiah, Christ Jesus, the son of Mary was (no more than) a messenger of Allah, and His Word, which He bestowed on Mary, and a Spirit proceeding from Him. Nor will they find, besides Allah, any to protect or save them.” Qur’an 4:159 “And there is none of the People of the Book but will believe in him (Jesus as only a messenger of Allah and a human being) before his (Jesus’) death. Allah’s wrath is on them, and in torment will they abide.” Qur’an 5:81 “If only they had believed in Allah, in the Prophet, and in what had been revealed to him.” Qur’an 5:82 “You will find the Jews and disbelievers [defined as Christians in 5:73] the most vehement in hatred for the Muslims.” Qur’an 5:110 “And God will say: ‘O Jesus! They said, ‘We are believers, and bear witness that we prostrate ourselves to Allah as Muslims.’” Qur’an 5:112 “Behold! The disciples, said: ‘O Jesus, can your Lord send down to us a table well laid out from heaven?’ Said Jesus: ‘Fear Allah, if you have faith.’ When the disciples said: ‘O Jesus, son of Mary, is your Lord able to send down for us a table spread with food from heaven?’ He said: “Observe your duty to Allah, if you are true believers.’” Qur’an 5:113 “They said: ‘We only wish to eat thereof to satisfy our hearts, and to know that you have told us the truth. We want to witnesses a miracle.’ Said Jesus, the son of Mary: ‘O Allah our Lord! Allah will say: ‘O Jesus, the son of Mary! Never could I utter what I had no right.” Qur’an 5:117 “I only said what You (Allah) commanded me to say: Worship Allah, my lord and your Lord. But Allah will judge between them in their quarrel.” Qur’an 9:30 “The Jews call Uzair the son of Allah, and the Christians say that the Messiah is the son of Allah. (Their doom is) because Allah sent down the Book in truth but those who seek causes of dispute in the Book are in a schism of great opposition.” Tabari VIII:98 “Between the truce of Hudaybiyah and his death, the Messenger dispersed his Companions with letters. Jesus complained of their behavior to Allah, and when they awoke the next morning, each could speak the language of the people to whom he had been sent. They denied and rejected the revelations of Allah, and Allah destroyed them, punishing them for their crimes: for Allah is strict, severe in punishment.”Qur’an 61:6 “And Jesus, the son of Mary, said: ‘Children of Israel, I am the Messenger of Allah (sent) to you, confirming that (which was revealed) before me in the Torah, and giving Glad Tidings of a Messenger to come after me, whose name shall be Ahmad, the Praised One.’ But when he came to them with Clear Signs, they said, ‘this is sorcery!’”Qur’an 61:14 “O Muslims! Be helpers of Allah: As Jesus the son of Mary said to the Disciples, ‘Who will be my helpers (in the Cause) of Allah?’ Said the disciples, ‘We are Allah’s helpers!’ Then a portion of the Children of Israel believed, and a portion disbelieved: But We gave power to those who believed against their enemies, and they became the victorious.”Qur’an 3:37 “Mariam was given into the care of Zacharyah. Whenever he came to see her in her chamber he found her provided with food, and he asked, ‘Where has this come from Mary?’ She said, ‘From Allah who gives in abundance to whomsoever He will. As he stood in the chamber the angels said, ‘Allah sends you tidings of Yahya (John) who will confirm a thing from Allah (the creation of Isa (Jesus), the Word of Allah) and be a noble prophet, one who is upright and does good [a Muslim].” Qur’an 3:42Qur’an 3:44 “Behold! Allah gives you glad tidings of a Word from Him: his name will be the Messiah, Isa (Jesus), the son of Mariam, held in honor in this world and the Hereafter and of those nearest to Allah.”Qur’an 4.171 “O people of the Book (Christians), do not be fanatical in your faith, and say nothing but the truth about Allah. The Messiah who is Isa (Jesus), son of Mariam, was only a messenger of Allah, nothing more. So believe in Allah and say not Trinity for Allah is one Ilah (God)…far be it from His Glory to beget a son.” Qur’an 3:46 “And he shall speak to the people when in the cradle and when of old age, and shall be one of the good ones.”Bukhari:V4B55N645 “The Prophet said, ‘None spoke in cradle but three: The first was Jesus, the second was an Israeli called Juraij. How shall I have a son when no man has touched me?’ He said: ‘Even so: Allah creates what He wills: When He has decreed a plan, He but says to it, ‘Be,’ and it is!” Qur’an 3:48 “And Allah will teach him the Scripture Book and Wisdom, the Torah and the Gospel, and appoint him a messenger to the Children of Israel, with this message: ‘Lo! We believe in Allah, and do you bear witness that we are Muslims.” Qur’an 3:54 “And they (the disciples from the previous verse) schemed, and Allah schemed and plotted (against them): and Allah is the best of schemers.” [Another translation reads:] Qur’an 3:54 “‘Lord, we believe in Your revelations [the Torah and Gospels] and follow this Apostle [Jesus]. but Allah’s plot was the best.” [A third translation says that “they” refers to “disbelievers,” not the disciples and they plotted to kill Jesus.] “And they (disbelievers) plotted (to kill Isa [Jesus]) and Allah plotted too.”Qur’an 3:55 “Allah said, ‘Jesus, I will take you and raise you to Myself and rid you of the infidels (who have forged the lie that you are My son).… Those who are infidels will surely receive severe torment both in this world and the next; He created him from dust, then said to him: ‘Be.’ And he was.” Qur’an 3:60 “The Truth (comes) from Allah alone. Then let us earnestly pray, and invoke the curse of Allah on those who lie!’”Qur’an 3:61 “If anyone disputes with you about Jesus being divine, flee them and pray that Allah will curse them.” Qur’an 3:62 “This is the true account, the true explanation: There is no Ilah (God) except Allah; Say: ‘O People of the Book, come to common terms as an agreement between us and you: That we all shall worship none but Allah; but he was a true Muslim, surrendered to Allah (which is Islam), and he joined not gods with Allah.” Qur’an 3:69 “It is the wish of the followers of the People of the Book to lead you astray. to set up partners with Allah is to devise a sin most heinous.” Qur’an 4:50 “Behold! They are (men) whom Allah has cursed: And those whom Allah has cursed, you will find that they have no savior.” Qur’an 4:54 “Are they jealous and envious what Allah has given them of his bounty? Allah sent down concerning him: ‘To those who annoy the Prophet there is a painful doom.” [9:61] “Gabriel came to Muhammad and said, ‘If a black man comes to you his heart is more gross than a donkey’s.’” Ishaq:144 “A rock was put on a slave’s chest. The transaction was carried out.”Qur’an 9:97 “The Arabs of the desert are the worst in unbelief and hypocrisy, and most fitted to be in ignorance of the command which Allah hath sent down to His Messenger.” Tabari II:11 “Shem, the son of Noah was the father of the Arabs, the Persians, and the Greeks; I must also make Eve stupid, although I created her intelligent.’ Because Allah afflicted Eve, all of the women of this world menstruate and are stupid.” Qur’an 4:3 “If you fear that you shall not be able to deal justly with orphans, marry women of your choice who seem good to you, two or three or four; Allah is Benign, Forgiving.” [The Qur’an claims women are unclean and polluted—worse than dirt.]Bukhari:V4B55N547 “The Prophet said, ‘But for the Israelis, meat would not decay, and if it were not for Eve, wives would never betray their husbands.’” Qur’an 33:59 “Prophet! [And here’s the freedom-to-pimp card:] But if anyone forces them, then after such compulsion, Allah is oft-forgiving.”Ishaq:469 “The Apostle said, ‘Every wailing woman lies except those who wept for Sa’d.’”Tabari VIII:62/Ishaq:496 “Ali [Muhammad’s adopted son, son-in-law, and future Caliph] said, ‘Prophet, women are plentiful. let the testimony of one of them be four testimonies, (swearing four times) by Allah that he is the one speaking the truth.” [top] [toc] [quotes main]STUPIDITY: Bukhari:V6B61N550 “The Prophet said, ‘It is a bad thing some of you say, “I have forgotten such-and-such verse of the Qur’an.” For truly, I have been caused by Allah to forget it. So you must keep on reciting the Qur’an because it escapes faster than a runaway camel.’” Tabari I:299 “Scholars of the nation of our Prophet say, ‘The tree which Allah forbade Adam and his spouse to eat was wheat.’” Tabari I:321 “When Eve became heavy with her first pregnancy, Satan came to her before she gave birth and said, ‘Eve, what is that in your womb?’ She said, ‘I do not know.’ He asked, ‘Where will it come out from-your nose, your eye, or your ear?’ She replied, ‘I do not know.’” Tabari I:299 “It was the cover of fingernails that had kept their secret parts concealed.” Tabari I:275 “Satan wanted to meet them in Paradise, but the keepers prevented him from entering. She led him to the tree.” Tabari I:267 “And Allah taught Adam all the names as follows: He taught him the name of everything, down to fart and little fart.” Bukhari:V1B4N137 “Allah’s Apostle said, ‘The prayer of a person who does Hadath (passes urine, stool or wind) is not accepted till he performs ablution.’” Bukhari:V1B4N139 “I asked Allah’s Apostle about a person who imagined they passed wind during prayer. When the rat fell down into the seams of the planks of the ark and gnawed at them, Allah inspired Noah to strike the lion between its eyes and a male and female cat came out from its nose and attacked the rat.’” Tabari I:360 “The first animal to be put aboard was the ant, and the last the donkey. As Allah says in the Qur’an, ‘Verily they have plotted their plot, and their plot is with Allah, even if their plot were one whereby the mountains should be moved.’” Tabari II:78 “And everything that heard him-stones, trees, hills, and dust said, ‘Here I am, my Allah, here I am.’” Tabari II:99 “Abraham was tested with ten Islamic practices: rinsing the mouth, cleansing nostrils with water, trimming the mustache, using a toothstick, plucking the armpit, paring nails, washing finger joints, circumcision, shaving pubic hair, and washing the rear and vulva.” Qur’an 2:138 “(Our religion is) the Baptism of Allah: And who can baptize better than Allah?” Tabari VI:21 “Qusayy purchased the custodianship of the Ka’aba for a skin full of wine and a lute.” Bukhari:V4B55N585 “‘O Allah’s Apostle! O Allah we intend nothing but good.’ The he demolished part of it near the two corners.” Bukhari:V4B54N52 “The Prophet said, ‘Kill the snake with two white lines on its back, for it blinds the onlooker and causes abortion.’” Tabari VI:75 “‘Messenger, how did you first know with absolute certainty that you were a prophet?’ He replied, ‘Two angels came to me while I was somewhere in Mecca…. Allah proved his innocence of that which they alleged.” Bukhari:V4B55N616 “Allah’s Apostle said, ‘The Prophet Moses was a shy person and used to cover his body. An Israeli insulted him, saying, “He covers it because of some defect like leprosy or scrotal hernia.” Allah wished to clear Moses of this allegation, so one day he took off his clothes, put them on a stone and started taking a bath. Allah proved his innocence of that which they alleged.”’”Bukhari:V7B71N643 “I heard the Prophet saying, ‘If anyone of you dreams something he dislikes, when you get up, blow thrice on your left.’” Bukhari:V9B87N115 “If you spit on the left side of your bed the bad dream will not harm you.”Bukhari:V6B60N373 “The Prophet explained, ‘Paradise and Hell argued…. It has been mentioned that there were four million people in the town.” Qur’an 79:1 “I swear by those (angels) who violently tear out (the souls), and drag them forth to destruction, by those who gently take out, by those meteors rushing by, swimming along (angels or planets), and by those who press forward as in a race (the angels, or stars, or horses [the translators added, clueless as to what “god” was trying to say]), and by those who regulate the affair.”Bukhari:V7B71N665 “The Prophet said, ‘No contagious disease is conveyed without Allah’s permission.’” Bukhari:V4B54N484 “I heard the Prophet saying, ‘Fever is from the heat of the Hell Fire.’” Bukhari:V8B77N616 “Allah’s Apostle said, ‘Plague is a means of torture which Allah sends upon whom-so-ever He wishes.’”Qur’an 38:17 “We endued Our slave David with power. So Allah on account of their crime, obliterated their traces, doomed them, desolated their dwellings, leveling them to the ground for their sin.”Qur’an 78:37 “The Lord with Whom they cannot dare to speak, none can converse with Him, none are able to address Him.” Qur’an 86:13 “Lo this (Qur’an) is a conclusive Word; The earth said, ‘I take refuge in Allah against you mutilating me. He will do whatever is written for him.’” Tabari I:293 “When Allah cast Adam down from Paradise, Adam’s feet were on earth while his head was in heaven. Allah has to punish the Hypocrites, men and women, and the Unbelievers.” [top] [toc] [quotes main]ALLAH’S ASTRONOMY: Tabari I:232 “Gabriel brings to the sun a garment of luminosity from the light of Allah’s Throne according to the measure of the hours of the day. The sun puts on that garment as one of you here puts on his clothes.” Tabari I:233 “When the Messenger was asked about that, he replied, ‘When Allah was done with His creation He created two suns from the light of His Throne. This is what Allah means: [in Qur’an 17:12] ‘We have blotted out the sign of the night, and We have made the sign of the day something to see by.’ The blackness you can see as lines on the moon is a trace of the blotting.” Tabari I:244 “Allah then created for the sun a chariot with 360 handholds from the luminosity of the light of the Throne and entrusted 360 of the angels inhabiting the lower heaven with the sun and its chariot, each of them gripping one of those handholds. Allah also entrusted 360 angels with the moon.” Tabari I:234 “Then the Prophet said: ‘For the sun and the moon, Allah created easts and wests on the two sides of the earth and the two rims of heaven. When Allah wishes to test the sun and the moon, showing His servants a sign and thereby getting them to obey, the sun tumbles from the chariot and falls into the deep end of that ocean. The sun, moon and retrograde stars [planets] by which Allah swears in the Qur’an [81:15], run like the sun and moon and race. I told the people of these cities to worship Allah but they refused to listen to me.” Bukhari:V4B54N421 “I walked hand in hand with the Prophet when the sun was about to set. The sun then says, “My Lord, where do You command me to rise, from where I set or from where I rose?” Allah will order the sun to return whence it has come and so the sun will rise in the west. And that is the interpretation of the statement of Allah in the Qur’an.’” Qur’an 36:38 “The sun keeps revolving in its orbit at the dispensation of the All-Knowing. Say: They are but signs to mark fixed seasons in (the affairs of) men, and for Hajj Pilgrimage.” Tabari I:204 “I asked the Prophet, ‘Where was Allah before His creation?’ Muhammad replied: ‘He was in a cloud with no air underneath or above it.’” Tabari I:219 “When Allah wanted to create the creation, He brought forth smoke from the water. The Qur’an is quite literally the Word of Allah, whereas the Sunnah [which is comprised of Hadith] was inspired by Allah but the wording and actions are the Prophet’s.” When quoting from the Qur’an and Hadith, I have elected to use a blended translation. There are countless meaningless words, foreign words, and missing words which is why translations differ so significantly—everyone is guessing as to what Muhammad thought Allah was trying to say.

-ne Voters want Kennedy to go is the Guardian’s stark headline over its latest ICM poll:’Only 38% of those questioned thought the party would perform best at the next general election if he remained as leader, while 52% thought a new leader would be a better bet.To make matters worse, satisfaction with Mr Kennedy’s performance among his own supporters is lower, at 76%, than that enjoyed by Tony Blair (82% of Labour voters), Gordon Brown (83%) or David Cameron (82% of Tories).

-ne In a recent study, PricewaterhouseCoopers found that 90% of all healthcare leaders don’t believe a taxpayer funded healthcare system is the solution to America’s healthcare crisis. the current U.S. healthcare model, I find it telling that in the PricewaterhouseCoopers study: When asked what are important or very important to the future sustainability of the nation’s healthcare system, more than eight in 10 (82 percent) said equal access to care; Moreover, studies conducted to measure the impact of technology on productivity within the healthcare and insurance industries since 1996 show a strong correlation between the proliferation of technology and increases in the quantity and quality of healthcare services within the United States. Unless there has been a fundamental change in the nature of the laws of supply and demand, rationing medical technology should drive healthcare costs up, not down, and therefore threaten the sustainability of the U.S. healthcare system rather than help it.

-ne Human Rights Journal Volume 18, Spring 2005TWENTY YEARS LATER: RECENT REPORTS HIGHLIGHT THE CONTINUING STRUGGLE FOR SIKH HUMAN RIGHTSBy Jasmine MarwahaAs my auto rickshaw wound its way through New Delhi one July afternoon, I felt a peculiar sense of familiarity and sadness. While the government creates powerless commissions and delays hearings on the widespread human rights violations against minorities in India, recent reports such as Reduced to Ashes: The Insurgency and Human Rights in Punjab[1] and Twenty Years of Impunity: The November 1984 Pogroms of Sikhs in India[2] focus our attention below, so that we may address and repair the damage caused by state violence.Although this Recent Development focuses on the condition of Sikhs, many other minority groups in India have been victimized, including Kashmiris, “Untouchables,” and Muslims in Gujarat, to name only a few. Indeed, recent efforts on behalf of Sikh victims, particularly before the National Human Rights Commission (discussed below), can serve as an instructive precedent for how to investigate and address other human rights abuses in India.[3]Recent publications by Jaskaran Kaur, Ram Narayan Kumar, Ashok Agarwal, and Amrik Singh shed light on the human rights situation in Punjab during the last two decades. In Twenty Years of Impunity: The November 1984 Pogroms of Sikhs in India, Kaur compiles hundreds of affidavits, police records, and journalistic accounts to describe the lengths to which Indian government agents went to kill Sikhs following the assassination of Indira Gandhi. In Reduced to Ashes: The Insurgency and Human Rights in Punjab, Kumar and his colleagues assemble thousands of documents and eyewitness testi-monies to record and investigate the disappearances of hundreds of Sikh men in Amritsar, Punjab since 1984.These authors uncovered thousands of documents that conclusively implicate police, local administrators, and even Parliament members in the deaths of tens of thousands of Sikhs in the 1980s and early 1990s. In the late 1970s, Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale tapped into Sikh discontent and organized a separatist movement to fight the “Hindu conspiracy” against Sikhs.[5] In 1982, Bhindranwale moved his headquarters into the Golden Temple Complex, the holiest place of worship in Sikhism.[6] He remained there until June 5, 1984, when Prime Minister Indira Gandhi sent the Indian army into the temple complex to capture Bhindranwale in a mission called “Operation Blue Star.”[7] According to the Indian government, the Operation resulted in 83 army casualties and 493 civilian deaths.[8] In addition, the fighting destroyed the main administrative building and Golden Temple library, which contained original copies of Sikhism’s most sacred texts.[9] Bhindranwale and almost all of his top aides were killed.[10]Whether Bhindranwale supporters or not, Sikhs were shocked by the cruelty of the Operation, particularly because the Indian government carried it out during the week on which one of the holiest days of the Sikh calendar falls (the anniversary of the martyrdom of the fifth Guru). for example, they spread rumors throughout New Delhi neighborhoods that Sikhs had poisoned the drinking water.[22] Kaur’s report convincingly shows that the 1984 pogroms were efforts orchestrated at many levels of government to kill as many Sikhs as possible.Aftermath: Sikhs “Reduced to Ashes”Following the extreme polarization of Hindus and Sikhs, Sikh separatism and terrorist activities peaked in the mid-1980s.

Kudlow’s Money Politic$: Paulson at Treasury

October 11th, 2008 by admin

Array Here’s the background: More than 60 companies have disclosed investigations, including 40 grand jury investigations, into whether they’ve back-dated executive options to coincide with days when their stock prices were low. One lawsuit, for example, alleges that Apple Computer backdated stock option grants to 14 current and former officers, dating each grant just after a sharp drop and just before a substantial rise in Apple’s stock price. If Apple or any other company back-date options for when share prices are especially low, executives who exercise the options get a windfall. According to Atkins’ logic, back-dating executive stock options, or timing them so they can be exercised just before the company issues a positive quarterly earnings report that raises share values, does create a windfall for executives. Anyone who believes companies will reduce executive compensation by the inflated value of a stock option has not been paying much attention to what’s happened to executive compensation in recent years.

EnergyBulletin.netBy Byron W. King“What do you do when fuel is the price of champagne?” As a writer who focuses much on issues of Peak Oil, I believe that is an interesting way to ask the question. The last time I looked at the price of decent champagne (not even the high-end stuff), it was selling for the likes of 5 per bottle and up, or the equivalent of 25 per gallon. Ouch! So imagine a bottle of champagne with a fuel hose and nozzle running out of it. Try to envision some very pricey stuff bubbling out of the Dom Perignon-style bottle and into the fuel tank.Oh, wait a minute. You do not have to imagine it. Just open up a recent copy of Aviation Week & Space Technology magazine, published by McGraw-Hill. There, in the center pages of the most widely read trade magazine in the high-end segment of the aviation industry, was a three-page advertisement that asks exactly this question and presents exactly this image on the first page. In the ad, Page 1, a fuel hose is running out of a champagne bottle. The sponsor of the ad was none other than one of the most famous corporate names in the world, Boeing. Welcome to the future of aviation.Orville, Wilbur, and Power DensitySince the days of Orville and Wilbur Wright, heavier-than-air flight has been powered by liquid fuels, almost always based on one or another petroleum product. (Lacking much in the way of oil, however, the Germans utilized coal to make aviation fuel during World War II. They lost the war, by the way.) Oil-based fuels are the only widely available substances with the inherent power density sufficient to turn a shaft such as to make something fly. Once rotating, the shaft can be made to spin a propeller, turn a fan, or otherwise to act in a manner that will harness the governing aerodynamic forces and principles behind flight. Let me digress on this topic.Power density is a measurement of power divided by volume. The power density offered by liquid and solid fuels is, generally, up to two orders of magnitude larger (i.e., hundreds of times larger) than even the best batteries available on the market today. This is why your gasoline- or diesel-powered car may have an engine with a rated output of say, “200 horsepower.” Absent the power density of gasoline or diesel fuel as it burns within the engine, you would be feeding a lot of grain and hay to the 200 ponies out in your backyard if you wanted the equivalent of that much power in your life. And just to be clear, all of that horsepower energy is derived from the rock oil that was stored in the ground over many tens and hundreds of millions of years. No geologic time scales, no oil. No oil, no power density.Increases in power density have had immense consequences for humanity over the past three centuries. Increasing power density was, in truth, the key element of the Industrial Revolution. For example, the Industrial Revolution commenced in the mid-1700s with the development of steam engines that burned wood or coal. According to a calculation made by a team of engineers at Yale University, this first steam engine had a power density on the order of 0.005 W/g (Watts/gram).The history of industrial development has been the story of how these first engines were continuously improved and over time hooked up to other innovative uses such as moving steamboats and locomotives and powering factories and electrical generators. And powering drilling rigs, I suppose I should add. Thus, power from fossil fuels begat more fossil fuels, and mankind’s use of these substances begat even more power. You could say that, at least figuratively, absent Col. Drake and his oil well and Mr. Rockefeller and his “standardized” approach to refining petroleum, Orville and Wilbur Wright would have remained in the bicycle business.Between about 1890-1960, the development of steam turbines and the now-ubiquitous diesel and spark-ignition engines offered users power densities in the range 0.05-1.0 W/g (per the Yale figures). These machines also ushered in the transportation revolution of the 20th century, to include the Wright Flyer, which used a primitive gasoline engine, and the concomitant rising demand for petroleum that has been the hallmark of the past century. With these terrestrial applications, aviation pioneers worked to develop improved piston engines, as well as the later-arriving axial turbojet and turbofan engines that have come to be used for powered flight. These kinds of aircraft engines today offer power densities on the order of 10 W/g, or 10 times the power density of even the best “ground” engine. With that kind of power density turning a propeller or rotor blade, or hurling “thrust” out of a tailpipe, or moving “bypass” air to the rear of the engine nacelle, it is no wonder airplanes can fly. (And for my money, it is still a wonder that helicopters fly. But they do — another discussion for another time.)“If man were meant to fly,” goes the old saying, “he would have wings.” Perhaps this is so. I leave it to the philosophers to debate. But that statement would present very much a moot issue without the wide availability of liquid fuel based on petroleum. The Smell of Flying; The Rules of Naval AviationFor many decades, flying was all about aviation gasoline, and it still is in the world of virtually all piston-powered aircraft engines. From the largest airports in the world to tiny little airstrips out in the middle of nowhere, the true smell of flying is the aroma of avgas. Along these lines, and very early in my own Navy flight training, I learned the first rule of naval aviation: “Don’t run out of gas.” (“What are the other rules of naval aviation?” you ask. OK, I will let you in on the secret. “Take care of your wingman” and “Always sound good when you talk on the radio.” But let’s get back to business.)Since the dawn of the jet age, in the mid-1940s, the principal fuel for axial turboprop, turbojet, and turbofan engines has been kerosene or some derivative of the substance. Again, the use of kerosene-based jet fuel is ubiquitous, from the world’s largest airports to the smallest and from the flight decks of aircraft carriers to the helicopter decks of offshore drilling rigs. If you insist on simultaneously breathing air and flying in it, you will have to take a few whiffs of jet fuel. Don’t complain. Just learn to love it.According to a recent report published by a research engineer who works for Shell Oil Co. in the field of aviation fuels, there is no realistic expectation that any new or replacement fuel will substitute for kerosene in the foreseeable future. Using liquid hydrogen to power the world’s aviation fleet is “pure fantasy,” said the man from Shell, for at least another 50 years. And forget any notion that biological fuels such as ethanol will come to the rescue. Unlike the case with automobiles, ethanol is a poor substitute for aviation fuel, due to ethanol’s lower power density. Ethanol just lacks that “right stuff,” although, in fairness, I should note that some companies that manufacture ethanol and build ethanol plants are promoting it as a substitute for aviation gasoline. Thus, good old kerosene and its derivatives remain as the world’s aviation fuel, not just of choice, but of necessity, for the indefinite future. And no less an authority on aviation than Boeing asserts that new planes being built today will have a service life of up to 60 years. So Peak Oil or no, if mankind is going to fly, whether for civil, military, or scientific applications, it appears that the world is locked into fossil-fuel based technology for the long term. This is not to say that the jet fuel of the future will not be “manufactured” from tar sand or oil shale, or from some other type of carbon-conversion process. But it does imply strongly that jet fuel of the future will still be based on some sort of fossilized carbon that comes from the ground. But this is another discussion for another article in Whiskey & Gunpowder .You Can Always Walk or SwimDepending upon how you view the statistics, between 6-8% of the world’s daily extraction and use of petroleum goes for aviation-related uses. This, of course, makes for a lot of refined oil product being burned and going out the tailpipes of the world’s aviation fleet. But then again, most of what goes out of the tailpipes actually moves airplanes through the sky. Aircraft operators are notoriously efficient, to the point of being ruthless, in their approach to both in-flight fuel management and tracking the costs of fuel. It goes back to that “don’t run out of gas” rule.Another way of viewing it is that the use of fuel for aviation purposes is comparable to the amount of oil that is burned up and wasted in, say, automobiles idling in traffic jams in and around large cities. The world could run its entire aviation fleet, and then some, with what is lost to heat and greenhouse gases every day just from inefficient commuting between leafy suburbs and urban cores. So when you are commuting to work, think about taking an electric streetcar. (What? Your community does not have electric streetcars? Well, maybe not yet.) And if you want to fly from New York to London or Beijing, you should take a Boeing (or a bus — an Airbus). If you value one of the key hallmarks of modernity, do not complain about refining oil into high-octane gasolines, or into Jet-A, JP-4, or (my personal favorite) JP-5. If you appreciate the ability to move from here to there in this world over great distance and at high elevation and speed, then you had better not criticize using rock oil as a source from which to refine the fuel that makes it all possible. Otherwise, if you need to travel to someplace far, far away, you can always walk or swim.Sip It; Efficiency Is the Big IdeaLet’s get back to that Boeing advertisement in Aviation Week magazine. Open it up to the second and third pages and you will see a handsome graphic of a familiar-looking, soaring, blue and white aircraft, described as “The New 747-8 Intercontinental.” It is Boeing’s latest version of the venerable workhorse, the four-engine B-747 jumbo jet that first flew in 1968. So here, in the centerfold section of one of the most important trade publications in the worldwide aviation industry, Boeing is marketing one of its newest and most important products with a direct appeal to a virtue no less than fuel-efficiency.The text of the Boeing ad is remarkable, considering that it promotes the B-474-8, which is one of the largest aircraft in the world. (It is also Boeing’s alternative to the even larger, and currently trouble-plagued, Airbus A380.) “Sip it,” Boeing states right up front. “Efficiency is the big idea.” Here is the rest of the text:“The new 747-8 Intercontinental is the perfect hedge against rapidly rising fuel prices. Redesigned with the most fuel-efficient commercial airplane engines in the world, the new 747-8 uses 15% less fuel per passenger mile. That’s nearly 1,500,000 gallons a year. All that in a cleaner, quieter, more comfortable 747. Now that’s a big idea.”A savings of 15% of fuel burn per passenger mile is nothing short of astonishing in the world of aviation, particularly in an upgrade of an older airframe design. Also according to Boeing, the freighter-version of the B-747-8 will use 17% less fuel per ton-mile. Boeing claims that its new aircraft design is one of the most fuel-efficient modes of transportation in the world, more efficient than cars, or even trains in some applications (although I cannot envision hauling bulk products like coal in a B-747-8).Have You Driven a Boeing Lately?“Sip it?” With these two words, Boeing is directly confronting the idea that flying must somehow be an “inefficient” use of petroleum-derived fuel. Far from it, according to Boeing. In its technical marketing literature, the plane maker states that its newer types of airplanes, such as the 777 and 787, and its advanced versions of older models are twice as fuel-efficient as airplanes that were built 30 years ago. (The B-787 Dreamliner is such a remarkable, truly revolutionary aircraft that it merits its own article in Whiskey & Gunpowder . Stay tuned.) Compared with aircraft constructed in the 1950s, the improvement in aircraft fuel-efficiency is even more dramatic. In the past 50 years, for example, airplane fuel use per passenger-mile has been reduced by 70%.Boeing’s engineers have calculated that, in terms of fuel burn per passenger mile, a modern B-747 filled to 75% passenger capacity is more fuel-efficient than what passes for most of so-called “transportation” in this world: a conventional automobile with a driver and perhaps one passenger rolling on rubber tires down a road.Boeing’s marketing literature states, in fact, that only when the average car is carrying a driver and three or more passengers (i.e., four people in the same car) is it as fuel-efficient as a large modern airliner flying 75% full. This may seem counterintuitive when you think of the size, weight, and fuel load of an airliner. But then we are talking about large numbers of people flying great distances, and not just one or two people in a standard-sized car running down to the shopping mall or commuting to work. The bottom-line engineering calculations appear to demonstrate that if you want good gas mileage, you should drive a Boeing. This is especially the case if you want to go on a long trip, such as to the other side of the continent, if not the world. The Future of the CompanyAt a recent conference in Washington, D.C., I had occasion to meet Kenneth Deffeyes, professor of geology at Princeton University. Professor Deffeyes is the author of the highly regarded, very readable, and widely circulated books Hubbert’s Peak: The Impending World Oil Shortage (2001); and Beyond Oil: The View From Hubbert’s Peak (2005).Professor Deffeyes told an interesting story about his first book, Hubbert’s Peak . When the book was released by the publisher, he sent a copy to a family acquaintance who works as a senior executive for Boeing. On the front page, professor Deffeyes inscribed a friendly note along the lines of “I hope you read the book.” Professor Deffeyes also wrote, “This is the future of your company.” About two years later, Boeing announced the launch of its newest commercial aircraft product, the B-787 Dreamliner. One of the key features of the 787 is its extreme emphasis on fuel-efficiency.Professor Deffeyes, in relating the story of sending the book, said, “I do not want to blow my own horn too loud, but I like to think that I got through to the top managers at Boeing. One way or another, professor Deffeyes or no, someone has gotten through to the top managers at Boeing about the long-term prospects for the price of fuel. Apparently, Boeing has read the book. Boeing gets it. Pass the champagne.Until we meet again

Let’s say that there are X% hard-core separatists, Y% soft-nationalists and Z% pure federalists. In the good old days before the sponsorship scandal, the Quebec landscape was 47% Liberal, 4% Conservative, 9% NDP and Green and 40% BQ. Before the second Gomery report hit, the Liberals had stabilized at 32%, the Conservatives at 9%, NDP and Green at 10% and the BQ at 49%. After the second report, the numbers going into the 2006 election were 24% Liberal, 9% Conservative, 12% NDP and Green and 54% BQ. The last election ended with 21% Liberal, 25% Conservative, 12% NDP and Green and 42% BQ. Ultimately, the Liberals lost 26%, the Conservatives gained 21%, NDP and Green gained 3% and the BQ gained 2%.This shows that the effect of the Gomery Inquiry was to tear apart the Liberal coalition. The argument that the Conservatives were taking from BQ support only works if you begin the analysis after the Gomery Report came out.We can start with a presumption that the BQ numbers before Gomery included all separatists. The Conservatives were up to 25%, and this likely included 12% from the soft-nationalists who moved from the Liberals to the BQ after the second Gomery Report. Since the Liberals have an advantage with pure federalists and the BQ has an advantage with separatists, Harper is trying to pull in the soft-nationalists.

Lower tax rates on investment, working through the expanded economic pie, are bringing tax receipts about 50 billion above last year’s levels— a nearly 26 percent increase. This would represent about 2 percent of GDP.Personal withholding taxes are rising nearly 10 percent and non-withheld income taxes (capital gains and dividends) are rising about 20 percent. It’s too bad federal spending is still growing around 8 or 9 percent, because if spending were closer to 5 percent growth, we’d probably have a balanced budget next year, or close to it.As Brian Wesbury reminds us in his Monday morning outlook piece, Hank Paulson, during his confirmation hearings, explicitly pointed out that tax changes affect economic behavior. As for Mr. Paulson, he told the large audience at this morning’s swearing in ceremony, “we need to pursue economic and regulatory policies that are responsive to today’s world…we must always remember that the strength of the U.S. economy is linked to the strength of the global economy.”Paulson pledged not to retreat from the global stage and argued that expanded world trade and investment is very important for the U.S., as well as our international partners.

I like the way it turned out. And, last week I stitched the Replacement Exchange for Nancy (I didn’t have her name)-but since we have heard that she will indeed receive from the person sending to her-I decided to forego the finishing format and finished this into an ornament for her. However, it did allow for me to do the finishing on the two projects I shared.Edited to add my finished Quaker Sewing Case…I was able to do the finishing on it today as well.FrontBack (oops, I forgot to take a pic of the flap closed to show you the needlekeep-but you can see it on the other two I have finished…it is the same as those two except the fabric is the same as the scissor sheath)Have a great weekend!BeckySC

Wolfgang, you awake?Rebekah was already awake, opening the curtains. Her companion blinked his eyes open as the bright mid-morning light made its way inside the room. The past two days were anything but ordinary for the two of them as they spent the first day exploring the North End of Paris. The second day however was spent with the mensch-maschine recovering from a Darkstrom soldier attack, the young lady having to play nurse.Well he spoke finally, Im well awake now, Rebekah. Wide-eyed and so on.”"Good!!” she said, grinning to him. “Cause we all gotta be at Champs-Elysees in a handful of hours. Were leaving Paris in the morning.”His face became alarmed. He nodded. After a shower and choosing what to wear for the day, the two set out for Champs-Elysees, on the Northwest End of Paris. Along the way the two communicated with Ralf and Johannes, who had been staying at Notre Dame with the company of one of the priests there. Karl and Anneke were already at the Parisian monument, and Florian and Elizabeth took the local cab.Once regrouped, the eight of them reviewed a map and, glancing to the points of the map where the destinations were marked, realized that they had a bit of ways to go before homeward.”Any more reports of Darkstrom sightings?” Florian asked, looking to the gang.”Not since the attack on Rebekah and Loudmouth” quipped Karl.”Shut it, Snaffy!!” Wolfgang retorted.”QUIET, BOTH OF YOU!!” Ralf snapped at the two. Immediately the two quarreling semi-human beings quieted down, while Florian shook his head.”Seriously” Elizabeth spoke in a calm voice, “we need to leave first thing in the morning, so we can get to Vienna early enough without the Darkstrom figuring out what the hell is going on. We cant risk what happened to Rebekah and Wolfgang to happen to the rest of us.Anneke nodded. Plus, we have no idea where exactly to go from the station after we arrive in Vienna, so well have to be there early enough to figure out where well need to stay. The sooner we get to Vienna, the better. The gang all nodded in agreement, with the exception of Johannes, who sat there quietly. Ralf glanced to her and squeezed her hand a bit with his. He had every reason to be worried about her. For one she was blind, for another she was very precious to the rest of the Düsseldorf Quartet. Add to the fact that he had fallen for her…Alright, so are we all agreed? Florian asked, disrupting his best friend’s train of thought.Agreed?? Ralf asked, blinking.Yes, were leaving first thing at seven tomorrow morning” his younger best friend noted.”Ah well yes then” the so-called leader of the bunch affirmed. “Seven tomorrow it is.” He glanced to Johannes. “Sounds like you better sleep well, Fräulein Johannes” he mused to his companion. She smiled softly but said nothing.Anneke handed the gang [except for Florian and Rebekah] each a Übermittler, which had the emblems of the Trans-Europa and the Rebellion on them. It was to look like a bracelet, all in all, so that the Darkstrom wouldnt suspect a single thing. These she explained will keep all of us connected to each other. They’re communicators, but they look like funky bracelets. Rebekah and Florian already have begun using theirs’, and I’m gonna help Johannes with hers. After all was said and done, they took a local bus to the Trans-Europa station, and rested there for the evening after preparing to leave first thing the next morning.

-ne I am not sure how many of you agree on this one, or may be how many of you want to agree, but this is something which is universally known, but seldom acknowledged.A success of a family is something which depends on so many things, no its not just money, its general growth, the respect in the society, the children, their education, their behavior, and so on, and in most of the cases, I feel the key to success of a family is the woman of the house. I do know that it sounds so cliched and kind of idealistic, too much sugar coated or kind of things people come up in feministic movies, but nevertheless, was really thinking about this, and kind of agreed at the end that its really true.Any argument I put forward from now on, can be easily argued with the opposite point of view, I know that you cannot make statements for men or women in total, but this is something which I have observed in most of the cases.Lets start with the finances, men mostly are very good in calculating, calculating from where money can come, or where one can make more profit and stuff like that, but when it comes to household they kind of have no clue, how things can be optimized and how to budget more out of the less money available. One main reason could be they don’t want to learn, or they have a kind of laid back approach that woman of the house would really take care of this.
