Array And the chief executive Andy Duncan’s statement entirely failed to address either the issue or Channel 4’s policy towards racism (according to the statement, comments like go home and Shilpa fuckawhiler and Shilpa Poppadom should not be construed as racist but as ’social’ and ‘cultural’). ‘at the heart of all our social documentaries is the intention to promote tolerance within society’ (Statement of Programme Policy 2006, p.6).The channel’s silence is all the more disappointing given C4’s willingness to broadcast innovative and challenging programmes in the past.

The assignment seemed pretty easy- make four 1-minute dances to be performed with 36 other 1-minute dances. My requirements were that the choreographic process be pretty simple and that I not perform the dances themselves, for I am parenting an infant and knew performing now would be a stretch. I can’t really help Khoi all that much since I can’t do much of the choreography, but it is sure fun directing it all and then watching him work so hard to make it happen. And the other new bit about these pieces is that they are really all about dance- and about very technical dance.

AP/NY Times:Mexico extradited four major drug traffickers to the U.S. on Friday, a sign that the nation’s new president will deliver on his promise for more cooperation in fighting cross-border crime.Osiel Cardenas, the purported Gulf cartel leader who is believed to still be running the drug organization from behind bars in Mexico, was extradited along with 13 others wanted in the U.S., all of whose appeals against extradition had run out, the Attorney General’s office said in a news release. The United States has long been frustrated by Mexico’s reluctance to extradite Mexican drug lords also wanted in the U.S.Mexico has said the suspects had to face justice in their own country first. But that attitude changed under former President Vicente Fox, who promised to hand over top criminals to the U.S.President Felipe Calderon initiated an aggressive push against drug gangs shortly after taking office on Dec. 1.”Today, both the Mexican and the American people can celebrate a monumental moment in our two nations’ battle with the vicious drug traffickers and criminals who threaten our very way of life,” U.S. Ambassador Tony Garza said in a statement….Ten others wanted on charges of murder, drug trafficking and sex-related crimes, also were extradited, officials said….This is good news for the rule of law in Mexico.

The Bears peaked much too early this season and I look for The Saints to score a strong 31-20 victory. In the late game The Patriots will once again show that they turn it on when it matters and that is in the playoffs.

There are also several collections of his work (two published posthumously) that mix poems with essays and short fiction. The poet Tess Gallagher was Carver’s longtime companion. The speaker of the poem seems to be asserting a kind of brave mastery over the river, while simultaneously making it clear that he has entered an unfamiliar and dangerous place.THE RIVERI waded, deepening, into the dark water.Evening, and the pushand swirl of the river as it closed around my legs and held on.Young grilse broke water.Parr darted one way, smolt another.Gravel turned under my boots as I edged out.Watched by the furious eyes of the king salmon.Their immense heads turned slowly, eyes burning with fury, as they hungin the deep current. They were there.

I did fess up to my lack of talent - and it hasn’t stopped me from planning my next decorative piece. My next purchase was a silk bedsack - usually used to line sleeping bags. Since I plan on staying in hostels - at least sometimes - the travel websites and books recommend bringing something to sleep on. My bedsack arrived today - blue silk - and it fits in a miniscule carrying bag. CUTE bedsack - which I’m already wondering if I can make it into a costume since I’ll be in England for Halloween - now I wish I had purchased a white one - easy ghost costume.4. 2 cozy pullover long sleeve shirts - that are supposed to wick away my sweat - which I expect to make during my backpacking treks around London.6. iPod - but I am actually using that right now - I know I’ll remember to put it back in the pile before I leave - right??7. Bigger purchase - a long aqua sweater and matching turtleneck from Chico’s - NOT a frugal purchase, but on sale, none the less.Oh, and my other impressive organizational feat is that I am putting my airline and hotel reservations in a nice see-through plastic sleeve so it is all together.

0407051909Originally uploaded by Avant Game The following are notes from my flight home from London yesterday. It is a rather incomplete record of the flight, but after a certain number of British candy bars were consumed at 34,000 feet I became incapable of formulating any thoughts other than mmmm….10:17 AM. I buy a Cadbury Flake bar, a bag of Maynard Wine Gums (never mind that I already have 3 much bigger bags of Maynard Wine Gums in my checked luggage and felt slightly ill after having a makeshift dinner of Wine Gums and white chocolate Flake bar last night in my hotel room), a Cadbury Dream bar, a Cadbury Double Decker bar (which is a mistake, I was really trying to buy the Cadbury Brunch bar but entered 52 instead of 62 by mistake and figure I will just give the Double Decker bar to Kiyash) and a Diet Coke.10:39 AM. I was supposed to be in the same exact seat on the trip over to London two weeks ago, but they stuck me in a middle seat in a side section, which I accepted without complaint because I arrived 59 minutes before the flight was schedule to leave, 1 minute after the check-in counter closed, and had to cry hysterically for 3 people of escalating authority before they decided I could even get on the plane. One attendant runs to tell the captain not to take off—we are next in line—in case the passenger needs to get off the plan and see a doctor. We should still arrive on time, which is good because Kiyash is going to meet me at arrivals so we can take the BART home together. I love how for most flights, the flight time listed is longer than the actual flight time. The flight attendants start making announcements, so I pull out my iPod to play over their explanation of the… Like pretty much all other 13 flights I’ve taken this month, I start by listening to Nickelback’s “How You Remind Me” I think this particular entry right here represents the twist in the mobius loop of first-person reflection.[…missing time, I made notes for this time period but never typed them up…]4:53 AM. (Witness the 14 episodes of Degrassi: The Next Generation I burned through on the way over, and the many Radio Free Roscoe shows I watched while traveling between Swedish and Dutch cities.) Mean Creek is distinctly not horrible.7:13AM. I need to take a break from typing up my now lamentably verbose diary notes. I take out wine gums to eat while watching the season finale of The O.C., an episode I downloaded via Bittorrent from my London hotel room. I overhear a flight attendant mention ice cream to someone. I land.Sneakily, I am posting this photo from an earlier flight written about on this blog, rather than a photo from my Virgin flight described in this post. I will give a British candy bar to whoever posts the correct flight reference in the comments first!

Array Nevermind - Nirvana For a certain generation, Nirvana was the bloody Beatles. Mellow Gold - Beck Like many others, I dismissed Beck as the “Loser” Life’s Rich Pageant - REM A beautiful and compelling and hypnotic album, through and through. Rage Against the Machine - Rage Against the Machine At a time when rap-metal fusion was thought a novelty, Rage unleashed a fury of snarling guitar mixed with exquisitely fine-tuned and heated rap from the diminutive mouth of Zach de la Rocha. Live From the Middle East - The Mighty Mighty Boss Tones The Boss Tones finally and perfectly captured their chaotically hybrid “ska-core” Surfer Rosa - Pixies The Pixies put on a clinic – - RancidA greater blast of pure and ebullient punk energy you will not find (post-1985 at least!). Energy - Operation IvySpeaking of Tim Armstrong, he was part of the granddaddy of the punk-ska movement, along with Matt Freeman and Jesse Michaels. Paul’s Boutique - Beastie Boys In certain ways the most inaccessible of the Boys’ Battle Hymns - Suicide MachinesThe perfect mix of ska and punk, anger and fun, message and goof. Zucker - Fastbacks If there was an entry in the dictionary for “power pop gem,” Diesel and Dust - Midnight Oil Great rock, great message from the politically conscious band from Down Under. New Adventures in Hi-Fi - REMAn eclectic and moving masterpiece by a band at the top and possibly the peak of its game. Second Hand Smoke - Sublime A loose collection of songs left over from the Sublime sessions, this album actually surpasses the famous self-titled LP in its range and musical muscle. The Carnival - Wyclef Jean A wonderfully inventive and eclectic foray into melodic hip hop, compulsive dance tracks, and Haitian rhythms. Vivid - Living Colour A great blast of rock, funk, metal, soul, and a myriad of other influences. MTV Unplugged in New York - Nirvana As fine an acoustic live record as you’re likely ever to hear. @ The Horizontal Boogie Bar - Brother Meat They brought the Monster Sound from Ithaca, New York to Rochester that night, and boy did they bring it. Tyrannosaurus Hives - The HivesA glorious collection of catchy and up beat power pop insanity. Get Behind Me Satan - The White Stripes I’m getting really really close to believing that Jack White and his ex-wife not-sister are putting together music that’s a perfect conjunction of the legacies of Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, and a wide-ranging array of gospel, folk, and blues legends. Thirteen Tales From Urban Bohemia - The Dandy WarholsNobody does slacker cool better. American Idiot - Green DayGreen Day keeps getting better and better, making major strides over each previous record. Original Pirate Material - The Streets An extraordinary and oddball collage of garage, hip hop, dancehall, and Brit pop stylings. The Mighty Mighty Boss Tones - Devil’s Night OutThis is where all the madness began, a rough and tumble yet hyper and explosive feast of raging guitars and skanked up horns. Weezer - PinkertonOne of the first thoughts I had when I listened to Pinkerton was that it was a ballsy album. Tenacious D - Tenacious DThey call themselves the “greatest band on Earth.” Odelay - BeckThere are many reasons to fall in love with this album. Raising Hell - Run DMC In my mostly white and Asian junior high school, every kid worth his salt in the schoolyard knew the words to this blistering and groundbreaking mesh of old school rap (which was kind of new school at the time, come to think of it) and good old fashioned rock and roll.Raising Hell still sounds fresh as hell (1986 slang-wise and always-wise).Somewhat embarrassing aside: I recall listening to Raising Hell on my duel-decked, orange Fisher Price tape deck on road trips with my parents way back in the day.37. Sing Sing Death House - The DistillersLead singer Brody Dalle has the vocal and musical chops that leave Courtney Love awake at night, sweating. - AquabatsIf you let it, this album can change your life. Quality Control - Jurassic FiveThis quintet has so much collective chops and flow and firepower, it’s nearly unfair. …And Out Come the Wolves - RancidThis album may be the quintessential moment when The Clash’s legacy (jealously guarded by Tim Armstrong) met 90s punk and ska-revival for a joyous and at times harrowing journey through the lives of young punks on the streets. Truth and Soul - FishboneIs there a better oddball rock band in the history of time than Fishbone? - PoguesWhen I get in a Pogues mood, this is often the album I’ll go for… Turn the Radio Off - Reel Big FishAbout as much fun you can have on a party album. Fear of a Black Planet - Public EnemyWhen Public Enemy is on (and my lawd they are on here) they will raise the hair on the back of your head. The Three EPs - Beta Band Just about the coolest, sweetest, most moving, and complexly layered record you’ll find (on this list, at any rate). Appetite For Destruction - Guns ‘n RosesAbout as great and interesting a rock debut as they come. Kiss the Mammoth and Run - Perfect ThyroidSkunk music at its finest: a massively wonderful combination of ska, latin, rock, and funk grooves.True story: After a show in the summer of 1995, I returned to my dorm only to hear whispers that I perhaps had a “thyroid problem.” The Best of Times - Murphy’s LawInsane tempo, tongue-in-cheek lyrics, and a full blast of hardcore firepower. Sex Packets - Digital UndergroundBeck once stated that he wished there were more bands out there like the Digital Underground. Last Splash - BreedersQuirky, bouncy, alternative rock dealt up super fine by Kim Deal and Co. Bouncing Souls - Bouncing Souls Once you begin to bounce with the Bouncing Souls, they stay with you for always. Check Your Head - Beastie Boys 54. I Heard They Suck Live - NOFX 55. The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion - The Black Crowes 59. Time’s Up - Living Colour66. Highly Evolved - The Vines 69. Evil Empire - Rage Against the Machine76. Whitey Ford Sings the Blues - Everlast77. White Blood Cells - The White Stripes79. Get Some Go Again - Rollins Band 90.

Our expansion plans differ from Zipcar in that we are focused on opening new markets.Scott Griffith, Zipcar CEO says they intend to be operating in 25 major metropolitan areas by 2009, up from 3 today, so they have their work cut out. After revamping their membership and cost structure (to one similar to Flexcar’s but with some appealing variations), Zipcar has continued to expand in DC, with vehicles in the same neighborhoods and Metro stops, and in one case, with vehicles in the same parking lot.For you armchair PR types, listen to the way Zipcar describes itself:From the day we put our first car on the road, weve proven that car- sharing can provide a smarter, more feasible alternative to car-ownership and dramatically expands the transportation alternatives that help to improve the overall lifestyle of urban residents,” said Zipcar CEO Scott Griffith.

-ne Quite often annual exclusion gifts will be made to minor children or grandchildren as part of someone’s estate plan. Third, if you make a gift to anyone where there are restrictions on the ability to get access to the gift, then the gift can be considered a gift of a future interest and does not qualify for the 1,000 annual exclusion amount. However, there are several methods for making annual exclusion gifts to minors with restrictions on the minor’s access to the property that will still allow the gift to be considered a gift of a present interest, meaning it does qualify for the 1,000 annual exclusion. Requirements:(1) The Trustee may expend principal and income for the minor before he/she reaches age 21.(2) Any principal and income not expended will pass to the minor when he reaches age 21.(3) Should the minor beneficiary die prior to age 21, the principal and accumulated income will be paid to his estate or to whomever he appoints. If the creator of the account dies before the assets are distributed, there are no estate-tax consequences, because the assets are not includable in the account creator’s estate.Donors should also note that beyond the 529 plans anyone can make tuition payments for private schools or for public or private universities and also for medical expense payments on behalf of anyone without the tuition or medical payments being considered gifts.
